Bhutto death: How it happened

Benazir Bhutto was killed as she left a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, near the capital, Islamabad, where she had spoken to an audience of thousands ahead of next month's general election.

A member of her PPP party, Mohammad Zaman, told the BBC what happened next:

"The meeting went perfectly well. She delivered her speech, she came down the stage and got on the land-cruiser.

"She started coming out, we heard three [shots] fired, and after that the bomb blast went [off].

"And when I came down the road I saw there was loads and loads of injured. And I really thought that her vehicle was safe and left the place safely. I was hoping she would be OK."

A BBC correspondent at the rally, Shahzad Malik, said Ms Bhutto had got out of her car to wave to a group of supporters who were chanting slogans in her support near the main gate of the park where the rally had been held.

It was then that the bomber struck.

"I heard a blast. I rushed across to where so many people were lying injured and dead," our correspondent said.

Police officer Mohammed Shahid gave this account: "The man first fired at Bhutto's vehicle. She ducked and then he blew himself up."


Ms Bhutto was taken to hospital. But emergency surgeons failed to save her life.


Officials say Ms Bhutto was shot in the neck, but it is not clear if the shots, the blast, or a combination killed her.


Crying and hugging


There were emotional scenes outside the hospital, with some people crying and hugging each other, and others shouting "Dog, Musharraf, dog" - a reference to the Pakistani president.

The BBC's Haroon Rashid reported from outside the hospital that hundreds of her party workers were still gathered there hours after her death was announced.

He said that others were coming from inside the building urging them to go on the rampage to show their feelings.


"What good are you doing standing around here?" they were asking.


Not long afterwards, lights went out and no police were in view. Our correspondent says getting Ms Bhutto's body out of the hospital for her funeral will present a huge logistical challenge.

Mobs and fires

As news of the death spread, reports emerged of protests breaking out around Pakistan.


As well as trouble in Rawalpindi itself, where Bhutto supporters burned election posters belonging to the ruling party, there were demonstrations in the north-western border city of Peshawar, and in Karachi, where shopkeepers closed their businesses as thousands of people poured out onto the streets.

The unrest was most fierce in Ms Bhutto's home province, Sindh, and security forces were on red alert there, as in the rest of Pakistan.

THE ASSASSINATION OF BENAZIR BHUTTO

2. As her convoy was leaving the park via the rear gate onto Murree road, she was shot twice in the neck and chest
3. The gunman then blew himself up killing at least 16 people
4. Mrs Bhutto was taken to Rawalpindi General Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 1816 local time.

La Jummah Mosque combat le Sida et d'autres fléaux sociaux
Profitant du mois du Ramadan, la Jummah Mosque a mobilisé des responsables religieux, les encourageant à se jeter dans le combat contre le Sida et d'autres fléaux sociaux qui rongent le pays. Plusieurs rencontres ont été animées par deux travailleurs sociaux, le Dr Fayzal Sulliman et Samioullah Lauthan. Pour Nissar Ramtoolah, président de la Jummah Mosque, " cet exercice a été très bien accueilli par la communauté et le travail doit absolument être poursuivi. "
Au préalable, une formation réunissant une centaine d'imams responsables de différentes mosquées régies par la Jummah Mosque avait été organisée. " Nous avons des défis à relever et nous devons faire face à nos responsabilités, tant envers la communauté que la société. Il y a beaucoup de problèmes et nous ne pouvons nous voiler la face, explique Nissar Ramtoolah. Ce séminaire s'inscrivait dans cette optique. " Lors de cet exercice qui s'est voulu un état des lieux des problèmes sociaux auxquels fait face la communauté musulmane, " travailleurs sociaux et professionnels œuvrant dans différents domaines, nommément la médecine, l'économie, l'éducation, entre autres, sont intervenus. " Dans le sillage de l'exposé du Dr Sulliman, attaché au Centre Idrice Goomany (CIG) de Plaine Verte et qui se spécialise dans le traitement des toxicomanes, " plusieurs imams ont souhaité démarrer un travail commun avec l'aide des ressource persons tels que lui. "
Le rapport Rapid Situation Assessment publié en 2004 ayant établi que les deux communautés les plus touchées par la toxicomanie à Maurice sont les musulmans et les créoles, les chefs religieux de ces deux communautés ont décidé de réagir. Le Conseil des Religions s'acquittant essentiellement de l'interactivité entre les différents groupes religieux vivant dans le pays, les autorités religieuses respectives " ne peuvent rester les bras croisés ", signale N. Ramtoolah. Citant le Coran à l'effet que nul ne doit rester insensible face aux malheurs des autres, le président de la Jummah Mosque relève que " certains imams avaient même pris l'initiative personnelle d'évoquer le problème de la toxicomanie et du Sida lors de leurs sermons. "
Le mois du Ramadan a ainsi été ponctué d'interventions par le Dr Fayzal Sulliman et Samioullah Lauthan, au titre de travailleur social, dans plusieurs mosquées de l'île. Baie-du-Tombeau, Bain-des-Dames, Pailles, Cassis... ont accueilli ces deux intervenants.
" J'ai essentiellement évoqué la corrélation entre la toxicomanie et le Sida, et la propagation du virus par les seringues souillées, explique le Dr Sulliman. Mes interventions ont été axées principalement sur un survol de la situation dans le pays ; les modes de transmission du virus et les traitements. " Le scientifique relève que " bon nombre de personnes ont souhaité savoir plus sur ces sujets et, une fois de plus, je me suis retrouvé confronté aux croyances et préjugés qui ont la dent dure chez les gens quand il s'agit du Sida. " En effet, poursuit le médecin, " ils sont nombreux à toujours penser qu'il ne faut pas coucher dans le même lit qu'une personne séropositive ; ne pas partager son assiette, voire, même pas la toucher au risque d'être contaminé ! " L'occasion lui a été donnée de rectifier ces fausses conceptions.
Samioullah Lauthan a orienté ses interventions sur les différents problèmes en mettant l'accent essentiellement sur la vulnérabilité des jeunes face aux drogues et autres tentations qui les guettent.
" On ne peut en rester là avec cet excellent travail qui a été entamé, souligne Nissar Ramtoolah. Maintenant que le rythme a été trouvé, il faut poursuivre dans le même esprit. " De ce fait, d'autres mosquées du pays accueilleront les deux intervenants dans un futur proche.

Objectif : évoluer
" Le mal est partout et s'adapte aux évolutions technologiques, relève Nissar Ramtoolah. Notre but est de combattre le mal sous toutes ses formes. " De ce fait, depuis l'an dernier, la Jummah Mosque a démarré une formation à laquelle participent une quarantaine de chefs religieux. Ils sont ainsi initiés, entre autres, à l'informatique et l'usage des ordinateurs. " D'ici trois mois, environ, poursuit notre interlocuteur, nous aurons une Lecture Room flambant neuf où pourront se réunir, en même temps, une centaine d'imams. C'est important pour l'échange d'idées et d'expérience du travail. " Parallèlement, la Jummah Mosque souhaite " créer des ponts entre les chefs religieux et les professionnels engagés dans différents secteurs afin de créer un réseau d'intervention pour venir en aide à ceux qui en ont besoin. "

Prisons : nécessité d'encadrer
" Grâce à un accord et de bonnes relations avec le Commissaire des Prisons, plusieurs imams interviennent régulièrement dans les prisons de l'île. Dans le sillage de ces rencontres ponctuelles, nous nous sommes rendus compte qu'il existe une énorme lacune en ce qui concerne les détenus quand ils ont terminé leurs peines. " En effet, Nissar Ramtoolah explique que " tant qu'ils se trouvent à l'intérieur des prisons, ces détenus bénéficient d'un encadrement et d'un accompagnement de différents services, dont de la part des religieux. Cela les aide à retrouver confiance en eux-mêmes et ils se sentent revalorisés. Aussi, ils souhaitent, en sortant de la prison, prendre de l'emploi et rompre avec leurs passés de délinquants, etc. " Hélas !, relève le président de la Jummah Mosque, " quand ces détenus sortent de prison, il n'y a pas grand-chose comme structure pour les aider à retomber sur leurs pieds. Ce qui les amène, pour la plupart, à rechuter, s'ils sont toxicomanes, par exemple. Et au bout du compte, ils se retrouvent à nouveau en prison ! " A cet effet, la Jummah Mosque souhaite travailler à l'élaboration d'une structure pouvant veiller à l'encadrement de ces personnes vulnérables.

Thousands of Muazzins in Indonesia begin reciting the Azaan. The process advances towards West Indonesia . One and a half hours after the Azaan has been completed in Saibil, it echoes in Jakarta .. Sumatra then follows suit and before this auspicious process of calling Azaan ends in Indonesia, it has already begun in Malaysia ..

Burma is next in line, and within an hour of its beginning in Jakarta, it reaches Dacca, the capital city of Bangladesh . After Bangladesh , it has already prevailed in western India , from Calcutta to Srinagar . It then advances towards Bombay and the environment of entire India resounds with this proclamation. Srinagar and Sialkot (a north city in Pakistan ) have thesame timing for Azaan. The time difference between Sialkot , Quetta , and Karachi is forty minutes, and within this time, Fajar Aazaan is heard throughout Pakistan . Before it ends there, it has already begun in Afghanistan and Muscat .

The time difference between Muscat and Baghdad is one hour. Azaan resounds during this one hour in the environments of Hijaaz-e-Muqaddas (Holycities of Makkah and Madinah), Yemen , United Arab Emirates , Kuwait and Iraq .

The time difference between Baghdad and Alexandria in Egypt is again one
hour. Azaan continues to resound in Syria, Egypt, Somalia and Sudan during this hour. The time difference between eastern and western Turkey is one and a half hours, and during this Alexandria and Tripoli (capital of Libya ) are located at one hour's difference. The process of calling Azaan thus continues throughout the whole of Africa . Therefore, the proclamation of the Tawheed" and "Risaalat" that had begun in Indonesia reaches the Eastern Shore of the Atlantic Ocean after nine and half hours.

Prior to the Aazaan reaching the shores of the Atlantic, the process of "Zohar Azaan" has already started in east Indonesia , and before it reaches Dacca , Asr Azaan" has started. This has hardly reached Jakarta one and half hours later, the time of "Maghrib" becomes due, and no sooner has "Maghrib" time reached Sumatra , the time for calling "Isha Aazaan" has commenced in Saibil! When the Muazzins of Indonesia are calling out "Fajar Azaan", the African Muazzins are calling the Azaan for Isha.

If we were to ponder over this phenomenon thoughtfully, we would conclude
the amazing fact that there is not even a single moment when hundreds of thousands of Muazzins around the world are not reciting the Azaan on the
surface of this earth. Subhaan Allah !!!
